He performs almost all instruments, but of course his focus is on the saxophone. Bernd Schoenhart plays the guitars, and Chris “Big Dog” Davis keyboards and programming on two tracks. With the exception of one cover, Kim wrote all the tunes himself. The album contains also collaborations with Davis and Raynard Gibson. Starting with The Pacemaker you suddenly feel transported back to the 80s with great bands like Al B Sure or the Mac Band. The song follows the rhythm and is a breeze for Kim. The title Sax You Up flirts with the double meaning, but nevertheless seems justified for the bouncy, energetic song that Kim performs with verve. A Pure Heart, Kim's song of praise to his mother, to whom he owes so much, sounds more sentimental and loving. I Once Had Your Love is a lovingly crafted cover of an old song by The Isley Brothers from 1981, a song that has already inspired Roy Ayers, Ledisi, Lee Ritenour and Phil Perry. On Time 2 Groove, Kim Waters shows the full range of his skills on the saxophone, making extensive use of the overdubbing technique. With Their Smile, he emphasizes his relationship with his charming daughters, who have given his life a new meaning. Palm City bears the unmistakable signature of Chris “Big Dog” Davis, who gives the song its typical character with his groovy rhythm. On Little Things, Raynard Gibson does what he likes best. A wondrous love ballad into which he has poured his heart and soul. With the trendy Throwdown, Kim shows once again that he is a master of his trade and can swing a bass-laden music hammer. In the final act, Just A Thought, he succeeds in creating the ideal fusion of contemporary and smooth jazz. With Time 2 Groove, Kim Waters has enriched the musical pool of smooth jazz with a successful album. Multifaceted and full of ideas, compositionally and playfully at a top level. Hats off!
