Magdalena Chovancova (sax. flute), Robert Fertl (guitar, bass, drum
programming, keyboards), and Gabriela Chovancova (drums and
vibraphone) are Threestyle, a group with origins in Germany and the
Czech Republic. With Feel The Vibe (2012) and Get It
(2014) the band gained already a distinctive popularity in the
smooth jazz world.
Now the group returns with their third album Road To Montery
(2016). On their newest project they are joined by a stellar
compilation of top notch musicians. Among them are Lew Laing, Paul
Brown, Nils, Jeff Carruthers, Robert Vally and many more.
The album starts with A Little Longer, which the same time also
represents their first single. Cuddly and lithe is the sound of
Magdalena's saxophone embedded in Paul Brown's smooth arrangement of
the highest level. Smoothjazz.com broadcasts live from Monterey,
California. The broadcasting studio is just a few hundred meters
from the beach. Road to Monterey is Threestyle's tribute to
this great institution featuring Nils on guitar.
Magdalena on sax and Robert Fertl on acoustic guitar are the main
actors of Like Butta. A perfect interplay based on long
lasting harmony. On Days Gone By Lew Laing brings in his
creativity known by his works with Paul Jackson, Lisa Deveaux or
Blake Aaron. Guitarist Vincente Pereira
is influenced by the Brazilian music of Carlos Jobim. On Cascais Breeze
one can smell this Bossa Nova flair.
Let's Stay Together by American recording artist Al Green is
perfectly adapted by singer Latonya Black Gilliard, a beautiful
voice for an equal eternal melody. Love For A Reason is
recorded sensitively by the group. The up-tempo Back In Da House
is settled on the borderline of funk and smooth jazz. A catchy tune
performed with a vivid verve. Tony Jezek's piano solo is
off the chain.
On Nice To Be Here Gabriela Chovancova is joining the group
on drums. The West Coast influence is definitely listenable even on
this tune. Robert Fertl plays skillfully his guitar in a George
Benson style while Magdalena Chovancova intuitively switches between
flute and saxophone. What A Day is not only a haunting
melody but is also performed with such great sophistication in duo
mode that it deserves a special mention. The album ends with a vocal
version of Like butta featuring Latonya Black Gilliard in
addition to the previous players and an album version of A Little
Longer. The meaning of the title gets a new sense.
With Road To Montery the group Threestyle has successfully
created their own recognizable style. Improved hooking melodies,
perfectly interpreted, full of emotions is what the audience loves.
