is emotion. Music is sympathy. Music is human interaction. Keep that
in mind and you understand the winning smile on saxophonist Eugene
Hunter's face on the cover of his new album It's My Time
(2015).
Although the title suggests contemporary music, it was his intention to create timeless music. In the production helped him D. Edgecombe (Rhodes, Sine, Hammond B3, Moog bass, bass guitar), R. Watford (guitar), James Barrett, "Lil" John Roberts, Auturo Whitfield (drums), Marcus Cole (vocals), and Vincent Crenshaw (guitar, piano).
The album starts with the sleek and snappy Drive Time, which has an astonishing modern approach. Eugene is certainly high on his profession and his accompanying musicians are top notch. With the mellow Bermuda Breeze Eugene reveals his expressiveness on the soprano sax. The tunes are professionally arranged, performed and mixed. A great acoustic delight.
Something Something Groove presents a flowing melody based on a shuffle beat keeping the audience in full swing. It's My Time shows up with a funky attitude. The zesty bass, the melodious guitar and the soprano sax find a common denominator, entertainment pure.
What is entitled Old School happens to be very fashionable. A very nicely overdubbed sax delivers perfect harmony and the Hammond B3 gives the whole an awe-inspiring gospel flavor. Forever In Love let's the romance speak. Marcus Cole shines with his silky voice and Eugene surpass with his sonorous sax. The purest joyfulness.
New Beginning has something of the group Fourplay. Contemporary jazz with the little extra of finesse. Giving You The Best I Got has a tremendous emotional impact with Eugene on sax in the lead and an extensive piano solo by D. Edgecombe. Moving On Up is a self-propelling groove, based on a bass rhythm. Everything flows and is consistent. With Backward Glance says Eugene Goodbye to the listeners. We know how great music sounds.
Eugene Hunter Jr.'s album It's My Time has so many excellent
moments that it deserves a place under my personal top ten of this
year. On the music market slumber many hidden treasures. It is a
great pleasure to discover them.
