Wil Van Zyl is the Vice President of independent Jazz, R&B and Urban music label Groove United. His day-to-day responsibilities include close interaction with consultants, distributors, producers, artists, and publicity outlets, locally and internationally, in an effort to ensure that Groove Unitedís talented roster of Canadian artists are brought to the worldís attention. Wilís additional responsibilities also include liaising with Groove Unitedís Asian and European affiliates, all while keeping this ear to the ground for local and international talent.
Wil commenced his journey through the music industry many years ago when he joined forces in the early 90s with his current writing partner Wade O. Brown. Wil and Wade formed Williwade Music which began as a writing house and evolved to also become a teaching facility for artist development and management. Wil and Wade penned hundreds of songs over the years and their magical collaboration even garnered them a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music.
Wil, a native of South Africa, immigrated to Canada with his family as a young child. His familyís love of music (everyone sang and played musical instruments) made Wilís current career path a natural transition from his earlier years in the financial industry. Wilís extensive corporate experience proved to be invaluable while he pursued his interests in music, as it afforded him the stability and freedom to venture into various music arenas including the development of many shows throughout Toronto. Wil also had the good fortune to join forces with many high-profile corporate sponsors, such as Labattís and BMG, to promote these initiatives, thus allowing him to develop and promote great new talent.
Wil began working with Dave Sereny several years ago as a producer, songwriter and collaborator on Wade O. Brownís debut album Complete. Wilís passionate vision and love of music gave him the idea that Groove United could not only be a recording facility, but also a formidable independent record label capable of competing in todayís markets. Wilís drive and determination was instrumental in developing Groove United ďthe record labelĒ and remarkably, in very little time, Wil piloted the creation of many of Groove Unitedís most heralded projects. Recognizing that the artists that Dave was associated with were part of the new and exciting face of jazz music in Canada, Wil permanently joined Groove United as their Vice-President and set out to put the company on the map both domestically and internationally.
Wilís current mission is to continue to develop an international outlet for all of Groove Unitedís products and continue to develop new artists and producers. Wil also endeavours to seek out new forms of digitally marketing music and believes that this forum will rapidly evolve and be the wave of the future.
