Robbie Jansen

Robbie is an original member of the Pacific Express brass section and part of the Abdullah Ebrahim group on many recordings and live shows.

Some of his numerous recording credits include Spirits Rejoice, with whom he performed for a number of years, The Genuines, The Rockets and Juluka. Though best known as an alto saxophone player. Robbie is a band leader, an innovative arranger, multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer of beatty jazz tunes. He has always remembered the need to entertain and though a serious and very capable jazz musician he has never been afraid to play in pop, rock and dance bands.

Together with Basil Coetzee, the two saxophonists were admired for their uncanny musical synchronicity. Their close harmony playing as heard in the Pacific Express recordings, in the Sabenza group and with Ebrahim, on the seminal Mannenberg session, are a testimony to a musical understanding between two players not often heard.

Robbie has turned to the Khoi San history as well as early Cape tradition as inspiration for his recorded work. This theme is explored on his latest album entitled "The Cape Doctor".

He is expected to embark on a major tour of South Africa in late 2000 to showcase the music on his new CD.
