JM Cruiz began playing Violin in the school orchestra from 6th grade to the 9th. while in high school, he furthered his musical abilities, by participating in the school choir. In 1969, he began teaching himself all aspects of the Guitar. By 1970, he had started his first Rock band and began gigging. After playing in the early 70's with various different Rock bands, he left the music scene to raise a family! During that period, he began to take more of an interest in one of his old loves, Jazz! Drenching himself in music from some very expressive, impressive, soulful and heart wrenching Jazz Artists like, Al Jarreau, Spyro Gyro, Pat Metheny, Diane shur, and any Jazz Artist that brought out deep emotion within him, he began writing and poring all his emotions and feelings into his own music. In 1997, he and one of his fellow musicians from one of his early Rock bands put together and released a Rock CD single.
This enabled him, not only to reinvent himself on the keyboards, but to pursue his long time dream of releasing his first "Smooth Jazz" CD, "Street Dreams" in 2001. In 2002, he has now been privileged to release his second "Smooth Jazz" CD entitled, "Up Beat On The Down side". "To me, Jazz is the most expressive form of music on the planet. Not only is it entertaining, it reaches the very deepest seat of emotion that any human being can possibly feel. It can calm you down like a slight breeze on a sunny afternoon. It can pick you up and soar you through the universe with great speed and accuracy, and bring you back a completely changed individual, with a new perspective and appreciation for what really matters in this life, feelings, emotions, and LOVE".
