I was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in the
West side suburbs. When I was 9, I begged my parents to let me play the
saxophone. My sister was playing the flute in her junior high band, and I
knew immediately that I wanted to play the sax. I still remember the day I
walked into Ridge Records in Parma, Ohio and walked out with my first
saxophone. My life changed from that moment on. By the time I was in the ninth grade, I was playing in the school band, jazz band, saxophone quartet, and even a rock and roll band! My teacher at the time was Joe Bosoty, and he guided me in both classical and jazz. I was offered a scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston, but chose instead to pursue a rounded education at the University of Michigan. The day of my audition to get into U of M's School of Music, my parents and I were nervously waiting in the lobby when we saw Don Sinta, the saxophone professor, come walking by. He stopped to say hello, and proceeded to tell us that he would know in 3 notes if I would be accepted into the U of M. I remember clearly that moment, when the door opened, and Mr. Sinta told my parents that he knew in 2 notes that I'd be attending the University of Michigan. Upon graduating the University of Michigan, I
formed a band and began playing jazz in clubs in Detroit, Chicago and
Cleveland. In 1993, I won the Detroit Metro Music Award for Best
Contemporary Saxophonist. That same year, I flew to Los Angeles and met
Alec Milstein through Dave Koz and Jeff Lorber. Alec and I hit it off, and
we recorded 3 songs shortly after that. Two months later, the car was
packed and I was moving cross-country to Los Angeles!
