Nii Amon

Nii Amon was born and raised in Ghana, West Africa. Thus, the strong
presence of complex percussion arrangements heard in his work is no
accident. It is the direct result of years of exposure to the rich
heritage of various rhythms and drums played by many tribes across Ghana
& West Africa.
His music education started in primary school with basic music theory and practice on the violin. At Achimota Secondary School in Ghana, 12-year-old Nii Amon progressed to the piano plus more theory. Six-string acoustic guitar lessons followed the next year. This was also the year he made his debut on stage playing lead guitar with "Traffic Jam", during an area-wide school talent show. For the next four years he played in a series of teen bands. Nii Amon's professional career began at 17 as the electronic organ player with "The Great Tops", house band at the Apollo Theatre in Accra, Ghana. When the band broke up two years later, Nii Amon, his brother, and the bass player were hired as the house band for Club Tabela, a European-style night club and hotel in Accra.
A year later, Nii Amon and his brother recorded five singles for Coret Records. "Over the Bar" and "Circle" with their catchy folk song medleys became instant hits. TV appearances and a tour followed. Soon after the tour, Nii Amon left Ghana for the United States. After college he moved on to Chicago, where he co-wrote, co produced and performed with various bands. He started The Obonu Music Company, to develop material for new artists and publish his originals. Today, he is still busy writing, arranging and producing music, his first love.
