sub5 is a Jazzfunk/Fusion sextett.Two horns+rhythm section playing originals ranging from smooth ballads to hard-driving funkgrooves. The group formed in April -99. The guitar player was offered some free studio time and called a few friends to record some songs just for fun. It turned out very well and they decided to form a band. They recorded a few more tunes and started to send demos to jazzclubs and festivals around Sweden and Europe. The reactions were positive and as of now they have a number of club dates and festival gigs booked over the coming six months! Upcoming clubdates this fall includes Jazzclub Fasching, Stockholms main jazz venue, hotel Lydmar in Stockholm and Ronne by kulturcentrum in Southern Sweden.


The band has just finished recording their new CD. The album will be mixed in Reykjavik, Iceland by Mezzoforte bassplayer Jóhann Ásmundsson. The japanese version will be mastered by veteran sound engineer Tetsuo Mori at Crown recording studios in Tokyo, and is due for release by mid-april 2002.

Mats Byström

Mats Byström, b.1968, keyboards, started playing the piano at age 9, toured Sweden with original pop/funkband "Watergarden" -88 to -89. Studied music full-time 89-94, 3 years various music colleges in Sweden, jazz piano at the University of New Orleans, Louisiana for Ellis Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Joe Pass, Alan Dawson, and contemporary keyboards at the Musicians institute in Hollywood for Carl Schroeder, Scott Kinsey, Cat Gray, Scott Henderson, Joe Diorio, Bob Magnuson among others. Toured Japan with original fusionband "Amatis" spring and winter -94. Worked in southeast Asia with various jazz/funkgroups spring -95 and -98. Active on the Stockholm music scene since fall -95.
Anders Pirinen

 

 

Anders Pirinen, b.1970, bass. Educated at the Royal University College of Music in Stockholm and at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he studied with Anders Jormin, Ron McLure and Jeff Andrews. Graduated with a Master of fine arts in music spring of -98. Worked in numerous constellations in varied musical genres. Several tours of Germany with one of Scandinavias leading salsagroups Hatuey. Played at most of Swedens jazz hot spots with such artists as Monica Zetterlund, Peter Asplund, Real Group and Tommy Körberg. Contributed to a large number of recording and producing sessions. Currently working as freelance musician in and around Stockholm.
Johan Öijen Johan Öijen, b.1966 in Karlstad, Sweden. Began to play the guitar at age 7. He formed his first own rock group in primary school.The main influences at that time was the "guitar hero" Johnny Winter and later Thin Lizzy (w. Gary Moore), but after having heard John McLaughlin, his interest in the jazz idiom began to grow. In the mid 80´s he started to take lessons from some of the greatest guitar players in Sweden among others: Staffan William-Olsson and later Göran Klinghagen, guitar instructor at Ingesund College of Music where Johan recieved his Masters degree in -94. After moving to Stockholm in early -95 he has been active as a sought-after guitarist and teacher of jazz improvisation. He has toured all over Scandinavia with among others Sandviken Big Band with jazzvocalist Deborah Brown and Bohuslän Big Band. He is currently a member of Swedish Trumpet great Lasse Lindgrens "Hip Bop Constellation" including bassist Yasuhito Mori and tenorist Ove Ingemarsson. The band released their debut album "Walkin´Around" in february 2000 on the Phono Suecia label. He is also a member of Lasses "Big Constellation", an all star big band performing regularly with different guest artists.
John Brodin John Brodin, b.1967 in Sandviken. Got his first drumkit at age 11. Became interested in jazz music and joined a college big band. Later he started taking piano lessons. He has been working with jazzvocalist Lena Jansson and tenor legend Lennart "Jonken" Jonsson since -91. In addition to extensive touring in Sweden and Germany the band has recorded two albums on the Sittel label. In the early 90's. he was a member of the soulband "V.I.P orchestra" backing up numerous Swedish funk/soul artists. Since graduating from Ingesund College of music in -94, he has been working as a freelance musician in Stockholm.
Stefan Persson Stefan Persson, b.1977. Began studying classical trumpet at the age of 9. Started playing jazz in big bands at 12. Served in the Swedish army as a solocornetist for 10 months following a 3-year music college in Västerås. After a year at Fridhem music school he commenced his studies at the Royal University College of Music in Stocholm in -98, where he is currently finishing his sophomore year. Toured extensively all over continental Europe with some of Scandinavias leading salsagroups, among others Groupo Clave from Malmo, performing at the worlds second largest carnival in Las Palmas, broadcasted live on Spanish national television. Active on the club circuit throughout Stockholm and Sweden, working both in big bands as a lead trumpeter as well as in smaller combos. Also featured on several albums released nationwide.
