Kevin Lettau

Raised in Germany by her single Mother, Lettau’s rebellious adolescence led her to setting out on her own when she was only fifteen. While still in high school she supported herself by cleaning houses and singing on the street corners of Del Mar, California. Kevyn spent several years studying dance before she made a full time commitment to pursue her singing career.

With influences ranging from Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin, Al Jarreau and Joni Mitchell to Charlie Parker, Donny Hathaway and the Beatles, Lettau assimilated the inventions of jazz improvisation into a vocal approach that was pure, soulful and uniquely her own.

Brazilian music became the next dominant force in her life. She spent 8 years balancing touring and recording with Sergio Mendes while establishing her own solo career, which has incorporated both Jazz and Brazilian sounds into a contemporary pop setting.

Her first two releases on Nova Records, KEVYN LETTAU and BRAZILJAZZ, won her immediate acclaim as well as a devoted following in both the U.S. and abroad, particularly in Japan and the Philippines, where she has achieved near superstar status. She was a spokes model for a diet soft drink made by San Miguel in the Philippines for several years with two T.V. commercials running and several print adds.

Her artistry and personal exploration grew in the four albums she recorded for JVC Music, SIMPLE LIFE in 1992, ANOTHER SEASON in 1994, UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE in 1995 and THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS in 1998. “Every record is different, because I’m always growing, expanding and changing,” explains Kevyn. Her ability to share emotional connections and personal insights is what sets her apart from the multitude of vocalists plying their trade.

In 1999 JVC Music released a greatest hits collection entitled MIRACLE VOICE, THE BEST OF KEVYN LETTAU.

Kevyn’s latest project finds her embracing the music of the Ska, Reggae, Punk sensation, The Police.

The arrangements all written by Russell Ferrante combine Kevyn’s Jazz sensiblity with Stings urgent messages about life and love.
