David Johnson David Johnson, guitarist and composer, was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His mother sang with the "Silver Chimes", and his father sang with the "Royal Harmonizers", both local gospel groups. On occasions, he would accompany his parents to rehearsals. He enjoyed listening to the singers and the music so much, he decided, then, that he would pursue a career in music. David started playing the guitar at seven years old. He studied three years with Tony King, a local guitar teacher. He began his career playing the lead bass for the world renowned O'Jays in the 60's. He was on their early albums such as, "A Stand In For Love" and "Back On Top". Around this time, David developed an interest in the electric guitar. Russell Evans, the lead guitar player of the O'Jays, motivated him to master the art of playing this instrument. David loved jazz. He was inspired by such jazz greats as Wes Montgomery, Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane. In the early 70's, he made the switch to Jazz and started a stint with Roy Ayers as a member of Ubiquity. He was the lead bass player on the album, "Virgo Red". David has played backup bass for such notables as Stevie Wonder, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Marvin Gaye, Dionne Warwick, Joe Williams, Betty Carter, Dakota Staton, Jackie Wilson, Louie Belson, The Platters and Johnny Carson's Doc Severinsen Band. Also, he has entertained at Radio City Hall, Carnegie Hall, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Village VanGuard and Town Hall in New York. David's debut cd,"Crying Man", can be ordered at |
