Charlie Wood
Charlie has been working on his own original Jazz tunes and has released his first album, "In The Thick of The Woods". This album is on Warner Bros. Recording artist Augie Meyers' label, "White Roy Records". Charlie recorded his album at CAM Recording Studio with engineer Clay Meyers, Augie's son, who also co-produced the album with Charlie.
Charlie's music is very different than Main Stream jazz. It flows down the Third Stream avenue which, by the way, is the perfect description of his music as Third Stream is jazz with catchy hooks over classical undertones. The Texas Music Association newsletter writes about Charlie, "…his style is Jazz, which he coolly weaves into a variety of sounds and feels." Another music writer of San Antonio's local newspaper writes, "'In The Thick of The Woods' is slick and smooth, but doesn't sacrifice soul and passion…Wood is able to infuse his tunes with power and personality." To name a few tunes on the album which exhibit this style, the tranquil tone of "Forgotten Hope" which feels like a lullaby, the upbeat Latin flavor of "Fire In My Soul" makes you feel captivated, the reggae rhythm of "Celestial Spirits" you feel like dancing, "Rebirth in D Major" sounds baroque and sends you back to the Renaissance period and finally the smooth blues flavor of "Give Me All You Got" that transfers you to a state of relaxation. As folks say, there's a tune for everyone.
Charlie, born in San Antonio, Texas, was raised in a small community called Bulverde, Texas. He began his professional music career at the age of 14 and eventually earned himself a music scholarship from his high school band department to a junior college of his choice. Since that time Charlie's experiences are widely varied from playing with Mickey Gilley, Johnny Lee, Johnny Gimble, Willie Nelson, Ray Price, John Conlee, and Loretta Lynn. He was musically influenced by such greats as Joe Pass, Earl Klugh, Wes Montgomery, Peter White, Johnny Smith, Chet Atkins, and many others. Also a major accomplishment for Charlie was when his song titled "No Reservations" charted in Cash Box magazine July 1994. Charlie has performed in the past as a studio musician for Astro Recording Studios and Gilley's Recording Studios. He also did main stage radio shows from Gilley's Dance Hall in Texas which broadcasted nationwide. Currently, Charlie and his band "Third Stream" perform at various clubs, restaurants and sponsored events by local radio stations. Charlie and his band have performed for events sponsored by KCJZ, Smooth Jazz, such as the jazz concert of Walter Beasley, Everett Harp, George Howard, and Gerald Albright, music concert at Schlitterbahn Water Park in Texas and Witte Museum's smooth Jazz 'n July concert in San Antonio, Texas. Charlie also receives airplay for the album on several radio stations such as KCJZ 106.7, KQ102, KSJL 96.1 and others. In addition, Charlie recently received endorsements from Godin Guitars, Quebec, Canada and Dunlop Picks, Dunlop Manufacturing Inc., Benicia, California. Charlie's unique style is felt no matter what tune he's playing whether it is his own or copy tunes. Music is Charlie's life and from his heart and his wish for you when you hear him play or listen to the album is to take you, Charlie says, "into another world."
