Nelson Rangell
Nelson Rangell, a native of Denver, Colorado, began his musical career by learning to play the flute when he was 15 years old. Shortly after that, he picked up the saxophone. In 1979, Nelson was named "Best High School Jazz Soloist" in Downbeat Magazine's nationwide competition. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he won the magazine's National competition at the college level. Nelson moved to New York in 1984; he spent three years working clubs and working as a sideman, not only on jazz sessions, but on jingles and pop records. In 1987, he began his solo career with the release of a CD titled "To Begin Again" on the defunct Gaia label. After signing with GRP in 1989, "Playing For Keeps" was released; ever since then a steady stream of awesome talent hit the stores on a regular basis: Nelson Rangell (1990), In Every Moment (1992), Truest Heart (1993), Yes, Then Yes (1994), Destiny (1995), Turning Night Into Day (1997). Nelson is a powerful and energetic artist, always striving for perfection. Nelson enjoys a wide range of musical styles and he is capable of going in many different directions. Nelson is a sincere artist, driven by real inspiration and thoughtfulness. Nelson lives every note and pours his life energy into every composition and performance. As for myself, Nelson has given me sage advice -- to seek out and be involved with music of all kinds. Some of Nelson's current favorites are: Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, Copland, Stravinsky, David Sanborn, The Beatles, Astor Piazzolla, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, and Milton Nasciemento.
